The main action of the LIFE+ 2009 GreenCity project was to implement an electricity, water and gas consumption control and management software in public buildings in the perspective of a more integrated urban management at a municipal scale (in Nantes, France and Vigo, Spain). The environmental hypothesis was be verified through the monitoring of performance indicators – such as water consumption per person.
Through the GreenCity project 47 public buildings in Nantes (France) and 6 public buildings in Vigo (Spain) have been equipped.

A sub-metering strategy allows to identify and integrate consumption data by use and / or specific local (electricity lighting, ventilation electricity, gas restaurant, gas heating …).
Sub-metering strategies allow measuring and analysing consumption precisely, however, the budget required per site is approximately 10 times higher than the establishment of a general strategy of metering
In order to motivate, commit and make users aware of the energy management through the new platform, a competition of energy savings had been set up between the schools involved in Nantes and in Vigo. The results of this “best performing city” competition are available on the page http://www.lifegreencity.eu/?page_id=707, in which pupils in schools can follow the results in a fun and understandable way. In the two cities, talks have been organized within schools to present the platform and the competition, and to inform users about the advancement. In the frame of this competition, Nantes and Vigo carried out awareness actions in schools involved.
Reduction actions and energy savings
Cyrisea quantified the impact of reduction actions through the IPMVP method, which compares energy consumption of the monitored period to energy consumption of the adjusted reference period. The positive difference corresponds to the savings for the given period.

In order to visualize the impact of the reduction actions on energy consumption and thanks to the Schneider’s software platform named « Struxure Energy Operation », the evolution of the energy consumption before and during the monitored period can be represented with graphics as the ones hereafter.
The awareness action (A1), encouraging school users to switch off all devices before weekends, resulted in a decrease of 17%* of the weekend electrical consumption in the School Sully in Nantes

The implementation of an automatic lighting management resulted in a decreased of 26% of the weekly energy consumption*.
The graph shows that after this intervention manual set has been put on again by users, explaining the high consumptions for two days. This has been detected and corrected the following week.
